Mukesh Chand Mathur (July 22, 1923-August 27, 1976) was an Indian playback singer, better known as Mukesh. He is considered one of Hindi film industry’s most popular and acknowledged playback singers. His song “Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai” from the movie Rajnigandha (1973) won him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer amongst the numerous nominations and awards he won. He was one of His era’s best singers.
The voice of actors Raj Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, Feroz Khan, Sunil Dutt and Dilip Kumar was also popular with him.
He was born in Delhi into an Uttar Pradesh Hindu family. His parents were electronics engineer Zorawar Chand Mathur and Chandrani Mathur. He was the sixth of ten children in a family. The music teacher who came home to teach his sister, Sundar Pyari, found in Mukesh a pupil who would listen from the room next door. After grade 10 Mukesh left school and worked briefly for the Public Works Department. During his employment in Delhi, he experimented with voice recordings and gradually developed his singing skills and also his instrumental musical skills
